December 2018 Updates

As 2018 comes to a close, we’re excitedly anticipating the arrival of announcement season. But before we begin the new year and season, here’s a look back at all of the news from December…

Torch Song

As first reported by several outlets (see: https://bit.ly/2QFHwYb), Harvey Feinstein’s play Torch Song is prematurely closing its run on Broadway and will begin to tour in the United States in the Fall of 2019. As of the publication of this post, the Ahmanson in Los Angeles will launch the tour, with additional cities and venues being announced later.

Bandstand

Confirmations are coming to us that Bandstand, the 2017 production about a group of musical veterans finding purpose in civilian life after World War II, will be touring in the 2019-2020 season. This comes after the initial announcement back in 2017 that the show would head to the road (https://bit.ly/2R3xHmQ). A cinematic production starring the original cast was released, and subsequently re-released, in 2018. Whether the production will hit any major markets has yet to be seen.

An American in Paris

Returning to the touring circuit is An American in Paris, which last played at the Marcus Center in Milwaukee back in July 2018. In House Booking is the booking company while Big League Theatrical is producing the production. Since it is accommodating to splits and one-nighters, and coupled with the fact that the previous run exhausted almost all of the major venues over its two-season run and the amount of new shows available, I don’t anticipate any major venues to add this show to their lineups next season.

Dallas Alliance

Also announced earlier this month, the Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM) and AT&T Performing Arts Center have formed a partnership that will make the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House available for use to the DSM’s Broadway series for up to four weeks per year. As noted in the release: “DSM subscribers will have a period of presale access to AT&T PAC Broadway shows at the Winspear – after Center subscribers but before the public. The Center’s Broadway subscribers will have similar presale access to DSM shows at both the Winspear and Music Hall. The subscriber benefits will begin with the groups’ 2019/2020 seasons, which each will announce early next year.” Read the entire announcement here: https://bit.ly/2Qr4xid

Season Announcements!

January begins the new year and also a new announcement season! Looking back at 2018, only 10 seasons were announced during the month of January; but the venues that announced were in several major markets (not to mention in my Top 50 venues), including: Dallas, Baltimore, San Diego, Fort Lauderdale, and the Pantages in Los Angeles. As of the publication of this post, here are the venues expected to make announcements in January:

  • Baltimore, MD: Thursday, January 17
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL: mid-January
  • Miami (Arsht Center), FL: late January
  • Minneapolis, MN: late January
  • San Jose, CA: late January/early February

Be sure to check out the Calendar for updates and additional announcement dates.
