The day after the iconic movie adaptation’s annual holiday airing on U.S. network television, and 65 years after its original stage debut, Concord Theatricals and NETworks Presentations announce that a critically acclaimed North American tour of The Sound of Music will transport the next generation of theatergoers to the hills of Austria.
Directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien, auditions began this month in New York City for the smash-hit musical classic, which will once again grace stages across the country, captivating audiences with its universal themes of love, resilience and the power of music.
Produced by Concord Theatricals and NETworks Presentations, the production will launch at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. from September 9–October 5, 2025, and will then tour North America for multiple seasons, playing multi-week and week-long engagements in more than 55 cities. According to director Jack O’Brien, “A few years ago, I was part of a group of collaborative artists who, almost inadvertently, stumbled on original conceptions for the stage mounting of The Sound of Music that had never found their way into production. We felt as if we were awakening Sleeping Beauty herself, and the results exposed a version of this classic virtually unknown before, and yet more dramatic, more detailed, more rapturous and more touching than any we had experienced.

RICHARD RODGERS & OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music & Lyrics) After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theatre. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms, and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the genre-transforming Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, GRAMMY, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein catalog is owned by Concord.
