2020/2021: A Quick Look Ahead

Last week, The Tanger Center, Greensboro’s new performing arts center, revealed its inaugural season lineup, which will take place in the 20/21 season. That got me thinking what else we know right now about the future season and compiled this list to help keep track. Take a look!

Greensboro, NC

As a recap, here’s the lineup for the inaugural season:

  • Beautiful: May 21-26, 2020
  • Come From Away: September 29-October 4, 2020
  • Wicked: November 18-December 6, 2020
  • The Lion King: March 3-14, 2021
  • Dear Evan Hansen: April 6-11, 2021
  • Mean Girls: May 4-9, 2021

Thoughts: As expected, Wicked is the main reason why we saw Charlotte’s 19/20 season extend into 2021. The show will first play in Greensboro, then head south to the Queen City. Mean Girls will be in season two, which isn’t too surprising. It appears that Dear Evan Hansen is going to be extending past its initial 60-city schedule (see below), and also heading back East for possibly the show’s first return engagements in that region. Otherwise, it’s a very strong season for their first!

Current Shows

Hamilton

As expected, the most teased show for the future season is Hamilton. Here’s the current breakdown of venues:

  • Angelica: the tour ends the 19/20 season in Denver, and will most likely continue to stay out West with these locations:
    1. Boise, ID
    2. Spokane, WA
    3. Albuquerque, NM
    4. Tempe, AZ
    5. Tucson, AZ
    6. Calgary, Canada
    7. Edmonton, Canada
    8. Vancouver, Canada
  • Philip: the tour ends the 19/20 season at the Kennedy Center, and looks to continue to stay in the East:
    1. Pittsburgh, PA
    2. Greenville, SC
    3. Hartford, CT
    4. Durham, NC
    5. Minneapolis, MN (possibly Angelica tour)
    6. Cincinnati, OH

Other Shows

Hamilton isn’t the only show that’s been teased for the 20/21 touring season. Here’s a list of additional shows and their presenters:

  • Dear Evan Hansen: following a record-breaking run at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, the Center Theatre Group announced that the show will be returning in the 20/21 season (see: Dear Evan Hansen Returning to Los Angeles). Other than the additional stop in Greensboro, this is the only announced stop so far. However, because of these announcements, it appears it will extend past its initial 60-city run.
  • Wicked: announced for Greenville and West Palm Beach’s seasons, the show looks to be returning to the Southeast–especially since it is already within reach time-wise with Durham and Greensboro.
  • Come From Away: Columbus made this announcement during their unveiling.
  • Frozen: Both Tempe and Oklahoma City (Spring 2021) will be presenting this show.
  • The Lion King: Fort Worth’s Bass Hall has announced this show’s presentation.

New Shows

Direct From Broadway

Although only one current show on Broadway has announced it’s touring (To Kill A Mockingbird, slipping into the tail end of the 19/20 season, playing from August 25-September 27 at the Kennedy Center), booking groups are already accepting inquiries for the following shows:

  • Ain’t Too Proud, Be More Chill, Beetlejuice, The Cher Show, Hadestown, King Kong, Moulin Rouge, Oklahoma, The Prom, Pretty Woman, Tootsie

Although these are subject to change, I would expect the majority to announce their intentions to tour around the Tony Awards in June. Moulin Rouge is most likely to hold off as it will not open until late June.

Additional Shows

At the moment, additional, non-direct shows are currently planning tours starting in the 20/21 season. These include:

  • Avenue Q, Grumpy Old Men, South Pacific

In addition, a recent survey by Broadway Across America specifically focused on people’s interest in several potential shows including:

  • The Girl From The North Country, Head over Heels, Jagged Little Pill, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and Unmasked: The Life and Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Whether any of these shows will announce a tour remains to be seen. But, it is interesting to consider which shows are potentially coming to a city near you.
